First house

The Ascendant, sign by sign

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It marks the cusp of the first house and describes how you enter the world: your body, your style and the first impression you leave.

It changes sign roughly every two hours, so you need your birth time and place to know it. Its ruling planet, the chart ruler, is one of the most important factors in the whole horoscope.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Ascendant?
Calculate your natal chart with your date, exact time and city of birth. The Ascendant depends on the rotation of the Earth, so two people born on the same day a few hours apart have different Ascendants. Without the time it cannot be calculated reliably.
What is the difference between the Sun sign and the Ascendant?
The Sun sign describes your underlying identity and what you are trying to accomplish; the Ascendant, the way you go out into the world and how people perceive you at first. That is why many people only fully recognise themselves once they know their rising sign.
What is the chart ruler?
It is the planet that governs the sign on the Ascendant. Traditional astrology treats it as the person’s representative inside the chart: the sign and house it falls in say where life is heading and with what resources.
