Intuitive Reading

Intuitive reading is the approach that interprets the cards from what the image evokes in the reader at that moment, rather than reciting learned meanings. The reader notices colours, the gestures of the figures, details that catch the eye and the associations that arise in relation to the question. It is not opposed to studying the tradition: the most solid readers know the classical meanings well and use them as the foundation on which intuition adds nuance. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with its detailed scenes, was designed precisely to encourage this kind of narrative reading rather than rote interpretation.
