Shadow Card
The shadow card is the card left at the bottom of the deck after shuffling and cutting, consulted once the spread is complete. It represents what remains hidden from the querent: an underlying influence, an unacknowledged fear or a resource not yet seen. It is not one of the spread positions, but it gives them context. For example, if the reading is optimistic and the shadow card is the Five of Pentacles, it is worth examining what material insecurity is being denied. It is distinct from Jungian shadow work, although it shares the idea of looking at what is being avoided.
